📜 History of Korean Constitution Day

From August 22, 1910, until Japan’s capitulation on September 2, 1945, the Korean peninsula was under Japanese rule. At that time, the U.S.S.R. held the northern half of the peninsula while the U.S. held the southern half. South Korea had its first democratic elections for members of the National Assembly in 1948, and the chosen representatives drafted the country’s constitution. On July 12, 1948, the constitution was approved, and on July 17, 1948, President Syngman Rhee announced it as the Constitution of the Republic of Korea.

On August 15, 1948, the first Republic of Korea was created, with Syngman Rhee serving as its inaugural leader. Kim Il-sung established the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea) on September 9, 1948. However, the United Nations General Assembly (U.N.G.A.) officially recognized the Republic of Korea as the only legitimate government of Korea on December 12, 1948, under Resolution 195. South Korea and North Korea are two separate nations, despite sharing a peninsula and the same population.
