📜 History of Kosrae Constitution Day
On September 14, 1529, Lvaro de Saavedra, a Spanish navigator returning from Tidore to New Spain, was the first Westerner to sight Kosrae Island. The island was formally turned over to the Spanish in 1668, and it was essentially colonized by 1885. When European explorers first arrived on Kosrae in 1824, the island’s culture was extremely stratified, as was typical of the period for the adjacent islands. The Kosrae civilization was made up of clans that were based on a woman’s lineage, a feudal system in which the nobility controlled the land that commoners farmed, and towns made up of small households that lived together in cookhouses.
The first mission station on Kosrae was established by Congregationalists in 1852, and by the 1870s, practically the whole island had converted to Christianity. In the current day, Kosrae is home to several Christian sects, and religion remains important in society. On March 15, 1874, Bully Hayes was shipwrecked at Kosrae after his ship, The Leonora, became caught in Utwe port due to a storm. For seven months, Hayes terrorized the residents of Utwe. He was caught by British detectives in September 1874, but he got away in a 14-foot boat made from wood from the Leonora’s wreckage.
