Lempira Day for the year 2024 is celebrated/observed on Thursday, July 20th. There are until the next observance.

The 20th of July is Lempira Day. It is a Honduran event named for a Lenca indigenous chieftain who led the resistance to the Spanish conquistadors in the 1530s. Chief Lempira assembled a 30,000-person army to battle the Spanish conquerors, but they were defeated. Despite the collapse of the Lempira insurrection, the Lenca commander is regarded as a national hero in Honduras. The currency is called lempira and is named for one of the country’s 18 divisions. Lempira Day is not a public holiday in Honduras, although it is celebrated throughout the country, notably in schools (most Honduran schools are in session in July).

📜 History of Lempira Day

A variant version of Lempira was discovered in the 1980s by Honduran historian Mario Felipe Martnez Castillo in a book titled Méritos y Servicios: Rodrigo Ruiz, Nueva Espaa, which was printed in Mexico City in 1558. The Archivo General de Indias in Sevilla, Spain, is where you may find the document. The history of Rodrigo Ruiz and his involvement in Francisco Montejo’s conquest of Honduras is described in Patronato 69 R.5. It contains his account of how he murdered Lempira. The paper consists of a series of inquiries that witnesses to the overthrow of the Spanish monarchy by Rodrigo Ruiz have responded to. He wanted to be compensated for his efforts with a pension.

The fact that the majority of Honduras’ population resides in the nation’s mountainous interior may help to explain the nation’s somewhat segregated approach to Latin and Central American politics. The population of Honduras, like those of its neighbors in the area, faces several economic and social challenges. This problem is made worse by the difficult geography of the country and the fact that violent tropical weather events, like Hurricane Mitch in 1998, happen from time to time.
