Today is a day to celebrate love, but February 14 is also Library Lover’s Day, a day devoted to book enthusiasts worldwide. The day celebrates libraries and the incredible, life-changing books they house. Before you question why libraries should be praised, consider this: libraries did not always exist! The term “library” is derived from the Latin phrase “a place where books are stored.” For the longest time, libraries were merely facilities designated by the state to “stock” books and precious documents.

📜 History of Library Lovers’ Day

Today, Library Lover’s Day is observed worldwide, with a different theme each year! For example, Bond University’s John & Alison Kearney Library went all out in 2018 to commemorate the occasion with a spectacular display of a vintage typewriter, pens, and paper. Visitors might use the goods to compose love letters to a particular someone or to their favorite library.

ALIA established the subject ‘Library Love Stories’ in 2019, which includes a fictitious story writing competition about finding love in the library. The hashtag #LibraryLoversDay was popular on Twitter the same year. In 2020, the South Perth Libraries hosted an event in which participants filled out a “Matchmaking Form,” and library personnel selected books and writers based on their personality attributes. What a marriage made in heaven!

Analyze your favorite character
Plan an event with your friends in which each person writes a complete personality analysis of their favorite character from a book. Exchange the analysis with someone who hasn’t read the book yet in order to pique their curiosity about the literature that has you so captivated.

Dress up like a book character
Why wait until Halloween to dress up as your favorite book character when you can celebrate Library Lover’s Day? The possibilities are limitless, whether it’s a character from “Twilight,” “The Hunger Games,” “Pride and Prejudice,” or “Gone with the Wind.”

Do some good
Organize a library event to welcome children with disabilities and life-threatening diseases. The goal is to work with a child to introduce them to your favorite book and its plot.
