📜 History of Libya Independence Day

Libya became an Italian colony in 1912 following the Ottoman-Italian war that lasted from September 29, 1911, to October 18, 1912. However, with its loss in World War II, Italy lost control of Libya. The country was then taken over by the United Nations, and control was shared between Britain and France. Lybia was later renamed the United Kingdom of Libya, bringing together the three Libyan provinces of Cyrenaica, Fezzan, and Tripolitania. Following that, King Idris al-Sanusi ascended to the throne.

On September 1, 1969, Muammar Gaddafi spearheaded a coup that deposed the incumbent monarch. This caused the Libyan Arab Republic to be made, and this date was chosen instead of December 24.

However, following Gaddafi’s death in 2011, Libya’s Independence Day was reestablished as a national holiday. It marks Libya’s liberation from its colonial overlords.

Libya’s Independence Day is a national holiday. As a result, schools and government offices are typically closed on this day to allow people to commemorate their freedom from colonial domination. The day is traditionally marked by national events such as parades and fireworks.
