The Spanish-American War ended with a US triumph and a peace deal that granted Cuba freedom. The Spanish relinquished control of Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines. The conflict also resulted in Hawaii becoming a territory of the United States.

During the early stages of the conflict, the United States fired on Matanzas. A mule was among those killed. With 200 people in attendance, the mule was given a military burial with full honors. The officers assembled to give a speech and fired their muskets in celebration of the mule, which was wrapped in the Spanish flag. On April 27, 1898, the day of the mule’s death, this became a national holiday. Although some believed that the story was fabricated, a chief officer claimed to have attended the burial. Some even dedicated songs and poetry to the mule.
