Maryland Day is celebrated on March 25th, and the tale behind it is legendary. Many people associate Maryland with seafood, but it has a rich past with intriguing elements. Although some historians think it was named after Jesus’ mother Mary, the name originates from Queen Henrietta Maria of England, who was married to King Charles I.

📜 History of ​Maryland Day

The ships set sail from Cowes on the English Isle of Wight on November 22, 1634. After a few days, a storm hit and separated the ships. The Ark landed in the Fortunate Islands, today known as the Canary Islands, before sailing west across the Atlantic to Barbados in the West Indies on January 3. The Dove returned to them after three weeks, and the ships headed north to Virginia on February 27. Early in March, they gathered supplies and headed to Chesapeake Bay, then up the Potomac River to the north.

They came to Maryland’s shores, much to the chagrin of the locals. Leonard Calvert sailed to Piscataway, where he spoke with the Conoy Indian Chief and negotiated a truce. He sailed back down the Potomac, and on March 25, English settlers rowed to the island of the soon-to-be-named St. Clements and celebrated their success with a feast.

The Maryland State Board of Education designated March 25 as Maryland Day to commemorate the state’s history, which started in 1903. In 1916, the General Assembly declared it a legal holiday. Today, Maryland Day is celebrated as a day of learning, joy, and exploration with events and activities that have to do with exploration.

⚡ Listen to some sea tunes
Music has the ability to transport us to other places, and there are festivals in Annapolis and other parts of Anne Arundel County that allow you to do so. The Naval Academy Band is also an excellent site to remember Maryland’s maritime past. The Naval Academy Band plays exciting pieces by many great composers that are about Maryland.

⚡ Native American history
Learning about Maryland’s Native Americans is a terrific way to show your appreciation. A visit to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian is an excellent way to do this. You will be able to visit actual Native American locations and holy sites, as well as view images, maps, and ceremonial and ordinary Native American things.

⚡ Set sail yourself
Visit Annapolis’ Dock Street to learn about Maryland’s ships. The Pride of Baltimore II is a notable tall ship in Maryland where visitors may learn about the history of privateers.
