Melon Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of August. It will be held on August 13 this year. On this unique day, we honor cantaloupes, galias, and all other muskmelons, particularly those native to Turkmenistan. If you’re anything like us, you’ve probably confused watermelons for melons at some point in your life. However, despite sharing the same family, these two fruits are significantly different. Melons, particularly muskmelons, have a rich agricultural history and are a source of pride for the people of Turkmenistan, a country in Central Asia. They now celebrate not just their well-kept muskmelons but also a magnificent crossbreed named after their first president, the Turkmenbashi melon.

📜 History of Melon Day

Despite the fact that we are commemorating all types of muskmelons today, Melon Day began in Turkmenistan and is culturally significant to its people. Turkmenistan is the least populous country in Central Asia, for those who are unaware. They are well-known for their wonderful culture, traditions, and delectable melons. Turkmenistan is responsible for around 400 of today’s melon varieties. They produce and grow muskmelons in large quantities, and this has been a part of their history and culture for decades.

Melons are so important that one of the hybrid products is named after their first president, Saparmurat Niyazov, who also invented the festival. He favored the name “Turkmenbashi,” which means “people’s leader.” The Turkmenbashi melon is prized for its scent, flavor, and size.
