📜 History of Mothers’ Day in Georgia

The contemporary celebration began in 1907, when Anna Jarvis led the inaugural Mother’s Day worship service at Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, West Virginia, USA. Julia Ward Howe issued a Mother’s Day Proclamation in 1870, 40 years before it became an official holiday, urging mothers of all countries to work together to support the “amicable settlement of international questions, the great and general interests of peace.” By 1911, every state in the US celebrated Mother’s Day. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson made Mother’s Day, which is celebrated on the second Sunday in May, a national holiday to honor mothers.

By the early 1920s, Hallmark Cards and other firms were offering Mother’s Day cards, but Jarvis thought that the companies had misconstrued and abused the concept. After firms popularized it in the United States, it spread to other nations and cultures, including Georgia. The day has different connotations in different countries; it is associated with various religious, historical, or mythological events; and it is observed on different dates.
