On April 14, 1865, John Wilkes Booth assassinated President Abraham Lincoln, although he was injured while escaping the scene. He then traveled to Mudd’s residence with conspirator David Herold in the early hours of April 15 to get surgery on his fractured leg before entering Virginia. Mudd had to have known about the murder that day, but he didn’t tell the cops about Booth’s visit until the next day. This information, together with his several story alterations during questioning, seemed to link him to the crime. Mudd was found guilty of aiding and abetting a murder by a military commission. 📜 History of Mudd Day

He worked as a doctor and a tobacco grower in Southern Maryland. His company suffered considerably as a result of the Civil War, especially after Maryland abolished slavery in 1864. In that year, he first met Booth, who had intentions of kidnapping Lincoln, and Mudd was regularly seen with three of the conspirators. However, his role in the story, if any, remains unknown.

Mudd is famous for sheltering Booth at his home after Lincoln’s assassination. As a result, he was suspected of being a member of the assassination plot. On April 14, 1865, Booth killed Lincoln at Ford’s Theater in Washington, D.C. Booth fractured his fibula when leaping from the president’s box seat to the stage. He met Herold, and they rode horseback to Mudd’s house, which was about five miles north of Bryantown, Maryland.

Booth was carried upstairs to have his leg splinted by Mudd. He then permitted Booth and Herold to spend the night. Mudd obtained crutches from a neighboring carpenter the next morning for Booth to wear while he healed from his injuries. After removing his mustache, Booth left Mudd’s residence in the late afternoon after spending at least twelve hours there. Two weeks later, Union cavalry located Booth and Herold in a tobacco hut in Virginia. Herold surrendered while Booth resisted. Booth had taken refuge in a burning shed. He was forced to come out and then shot dead. For years, there has been debate over Mudd’s actions and his role in the crime.
