📜 History of National Automatic Door Day
According to historian Joseph Needham’s 1986 book, “Science and Civilization in China,” Emperor Yang of Sui built a foot sensor-activated automated door in the royal library a long time later, in the 17th century.
Only in the twentieth century did the world see the first really automated doors. The automated door was invented in 1931 by American engineers Horace Raymond and Sheldon Roby. This gadget was later placed in Connecticut’s Wilcox’s Pier Restaurant and would open for waiters bringing dishes of food and drink.
Nonetheless, the world acknowledges Dee Horton and Lew Hewitt, two American engineers, as the brains behind today’s automated doors. Their 1954 idea employed sensors placed within floor mats to ‘inform’ the doors that someone was about to enter, and presto! The doors would automatically open. By 1960, these doors had reached the commercial sector and were becoming increasingly prevalent. Automatic doors were first used in large banks, hotels, and public buildings.
Motion sensors were created, low-energy doors were introduced, access doors now accommodated impaired people, and automatic doors became a global phenomenon. Automatic doors are becoming increasingly commonplace, opening and shutting to safely let or evict individuals from various structures.
