📜 History of National Boys’ and Girls’ Club Day for Kids
The Boys & Girls Clubs of America established National Boys & Girls Club Day for Kids to help “all young people reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.” Mary Goodwin, Alice Goodwin, and Elizabeth Hammersley founded the organization in 1860 in Hartford, Connecticut, to give a good alternative for character development for young boys roaming the streets. They were concerned with improving the boys’ conduct and assisting them in developing their expectations and objectives. By 1906, numerous similar societies had joined the Club, resulting in a countrywide movement. In 1956, the Boys Club of America was granted a Congressional Charter.
The club expanded its reach to include females in 1990. Congress revised and renewed the organization’s charter and changed its name to Boys & Girls Clubs of America. In 2006, the organization celebrated its 100th anniversary, celebrating a century of offering “hope and opportunity to young people across the country.”
