πŸ“œ History of National Breadstick Day

One such story begins when the young duke, Vittorio Amedeo II di Savoia, was nine years old. He had digestive problems in the past, which made it hard for him to eat and slowed down his growth.

His mother requested that the court doctors find a solution to feed her son. The physician, who was quite intelligent, blamed the illness on dangerous intestinal microbes in bread. The doctor had suffered from identical intestinal problems. His solution at the time? his mother’s home-baked bread

The doctor requested that a local baker replicate the bread sticks for the duke. It was successful. Vittorio recovered and ascended to the throne. In the Savoia household, the crisp grissino became the favorite bread. As a result, visiting kings and aristocracy of the period all got the opportunity to test it out. Duke Vittorio ate his first breadstick when he was only four years old. Only four years later, officials had to set a price cap because there was so much demand.

Did breadsticks truly heal the Duke? It is probable that diners have already enjoyed grissini. But that makes for an interesting narrative.
