📜 History of National Bundt Day
Members of the Hadassah Society, Rose Joshua and Fanni Schanfield, addressed the creators of Nordic Ware, H. Davey Dalquist and Mark S. Dalquist. They hoped Nordic Ware would make a pan for the traditional Gugelhupf cake. The founders agreed and manufactured a limited number of these brand new ‘Bundt’ pans with the “t” added for marketing purposes.
The first run did not sell well, and the business contemplated terminating the line. It eventually gained popularity after being mentioned in “The New Good Housekeeping.”
After Ella Helfrich won the Pillsbury Bake-Off with her ‘Tunnel of Fudge’ baked in a Bundt pan, the Bundt pan gained popularity. When Ella won the bake-off, Pillsbury received over 200,000 orders for Bundt pans. The pans eventually eclipsed the Jello-O molds as the most popular molds in the country.
National Bundt Day was established to commemorate the popularity of Bundt pans during the past 60 years. Pillsbury even licensed the moniker in order to offer exclusive Bundt pancake mixes.
Unlike the cake that inspired it, Bundt cakes are named after the shape of the pan rather than the recipe. A Bundt pan may be used for a variety of dishes. The main thing to remember is that the hole in the center signifies that a larger percentage of the batter is in contact with the pan. Because of this, as well as the higher capacity of Bundt pans, baking time and temperature must be modified when baking in a Bundt pan.
