📜 History of National Cellophane Tape Day

Richard Gurley Drew has been credited with creating cellophane tape. In 1920, he started working for the St. Paul, Minnesota-based 3M firm. In 1925, Drew created this masking tape specifically for cars. But it wasn’t until 1929 that he had the notion to turn the just-invented cellophane into tape. The moisture-proof material cellophane was once used to wrap groceries and baked goods. Drew set out to make a tape out of cellophane so that he could seal packages and not stand out.

Scotch Cellulose Tape was the original name for cellophane tape. Scotch Transparent Tape was then given the moniker. when a body shop painter was testing the tape and exclaimed in irritation, “Take this tape back to those Scotch bosses of yours and tell them to put more adhesive on it!” The tape was given the moniker “Scotch.”

On January 31, 1930, cellophane tape was made known to the general public, and its marketing took off. On May 27 of the same year, it received a patent. As a result, this day has been designated as National Cellophane Tape Day.
