📜 History of National Chamoy Day

Although the actual date of the invention of chamoy is unknown, historians believe that it most likely occurred between the 16th and 19th centuries. During this period, several Asian ingredients, such as tamarind, mango, and “see mui,” arrived in Mexico. Even though no one knows for sure when Mexicans started eating chamoy, the change probably happened slowly.

In Mexico, chamoy is regarded as junk food and is more frequently encountered on the streets than in upscale dining establishments. Street food sellers in Mexico and the US frequently utilize chamoy, which has been reimagined as a spicy sauce in recent years.

Chamoy is frequently available in powdered form, similar to a spice blend, and is offered in bottles as a sauce. Although less popular, it is also available in paste form. Due to its use as a spice to cover apples with, chamoy paste is occasionally referred to as “apple paste.” As a common Mexican snack, apples are frequently coated in chamoy paste and served whole, like candy apples. In actuality, chamoy is used to flavor a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables; it is frequently poured over mango, pineapple, jicama, watermelon, and avocado.
