📜 History of National Comic Book Day

The appearance of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster’s Superman in 1938 catapulted comic books into the mainstream, ushering in the “Golden Age of Comics.” The superhero stereotype arose as a result of this. According to historian Michael A. Amundson, attractive comic-book characters helped to alleviate young readers’ concerns about nuclear war and the issues raised by nuclear power.

There are four eras in the history of the American comic book. The Golden Age of Comic Books began in the 1930s and is regarded as the genre’s birth. The Silver Age is believed to have begun with the first successful resuscitation of the then-dormant superhero form, the Flash’s debut in 1956. This era continued until the early 1970s, when Marvel Comics introduced realistic superheroes like the Fantastic Four and Spider-Man. The Bronze Age is less well defined, however; it lasts from the early 1970s until the mid-1980s. This age sees the reintroduction of darker narrative elements and stories that are more relevant to societal concerns like racism.

The Modern Age of Comics spans the mid-1980s to the present. Many comic book characters were revamped over the first 15 years of this time, authors rose to prominence in the business, independent comics thrived, and major publishing firms grew more commercialized. Because of the popularity and aesthetic influence of comics with serious subjects, such as Batman: The Dark Knight Returns and Watchmen, this era is sometimes known as the “Dark Age of Comic Books.”
