Every year, from June 5 to June 11, the National Commuter Challenge is observed. This week-long Canadian holiday encourages friendly rivalry among communities and companies across the country. Citizens are urged to leave their automobiles at home in favor of more environmentally friendly modes of transportation such as walking, cycling, carpooling, and public transportation. Participants in the commuter challenge are awarded for their efforts and may track their points on the commuter challenge website. Each city has coordinators who help businesses and communities. Distance, gasoline cost savings, calorie intake, and pollution reduction are some of the metrics measured during the challenge.

📜 History of National Commuter Challenge

By the year 2000, 20 cities had signed up for the National Commuter Challenge. The challenge was started in 2003 by environmental minister David Anderson. Participants came from every province and territory in Canada. Justin Trudeau was appointed national spokesman.

The National Commuter Challenge is now organized by a small team of volunteers from the Alberta S.A.A. office. The initiative is funded by registration fees paid by challenge participants, many of whom are big businesses in Canada. Regional coordinators also help the City of Calgary and local charities that support sustainable transportation. More than 3,000 individuals took part in 2021, protecting the environment from 76.5 tons of hazardous pollutants.

Carpooling has gone digital in the twenty-first century. Ridesharing applications may now be used for regular commuting.

Remote working
If you need to complete some task and can do it remotely, do so. Don’t contribute to pollution by driving or taking the bus to work when you can do it yourself.
