πŸ“œ History of National Crouton Day

The term “croutons” originally appeared in France, where it refers to bread crusts chopped into little pieces and served with beverages. Croutons are thought to have been inspired by French biscotti and other antique baked foods. On the internet, there’s even a renowned folk story about croutons! According to legend, the ill-mannered knight-turned-diplomat, Sir Edgar Crouton, was dispatched to England, but no one understood how he won the appointment. Sir Crouton was offered soup and bread together while eating with the King of England one night, as he was regularly forced to do as a diplomat. In his eagerness to eat, he dropped many pieces of bread into his soup and was unable to pick them out while the king was watching. He just shoved everything into his mouth, bread, soup, and all. Fortunately, this was wonderful. Sir Crouton thought this meal needed a new name, and when he couldn’t find one, he gave it one of his own.

Rothbury Farms, a family-owned American firm, decided to hold a special day to honor this basic bread meal. They established this day in 2015, and America has been commemorating this crunchy addition to cuisine ever since.
