Howard Leslie Sobel kept Devil Dog cakes in his cupboard, which his grandson Sean Alexander Sobel adored. He looked forward to discovering them in his grandfather’s pantry and removing one for each of them to share. This fun activity became a family tradition quickly, which led Sean to create National Devil Dog Day in honor of his grandfather.

Hostess Brands, an American bakery firm, owns Drake’s, which developed the Devil Dogs cake idea. They declared bankruptcy in 2012 and were bought out the following year by McKee Foods Corporation, another snack food and granola maker. This company brought back some of its most popular products, like Ring Dings, Yankee Doodles, and Devil Dogs cakes.

The deterioration of butter or lard in cream-filled treats led to the creation of hydrogenated oil, which kept shelf-stable products palatable for extended periods of time.
