However, another school of thought contends that hoagies originated in another Chester eatery named Emil’s. Another account suggests that these sandwiches were provided to the least fortunate by deli operators in south Philadelphia. The term “hoagie” is claimed to be derived from the phrase “on the hoke,” which means “to scrounge,” a term associated with the poor. The term “hoggie” is also said to be a play on the word “hog” since the sandwiches were so huge that individuals who ate them resembled pigs! These are their words, not ours.
