National Elias Day for the year 2024 is celebrated/observed on Wednesday, June 7th. There are until the next observance.

Every year on June 7, National Elias Day is commemorated in full splendor. Elias is similar to the naming trends and popularity of Elijah. Both names have been around and in use since early America, when the government began collecting naming practices. Elias was in moderate use at the beginning of the twentieth century and has gradually dropped in usage in the decades afterwards. In the late 1950s, the name reaches an all-time low before reversing course. While not as popular as Elijah or Eli on the list of the most popular boys’ names, Elias holds its own. The name is steadily making its way into the Top 100; given its current trajectory, we’ll have to wait a few years to see whether that happens. Elias should be considered an alternative to Elijah by parents. It’s less trendy and overblown, with a more pleasant tone.

📜 History of National Elias Day

Elijah is taken to heaven in a chariot of fire in 2 Kings 2:11 and is never seen again. Jewish tradition holds that Elijah is still alive and will manifest when the Messiah is revealed. Other sacred books, including the Quran, make mention of Elias. Elias is a common last name as well as a popular first name throughout many cultures. Like the Prophet Elijah, Elias’ name denotes strength and authority in those who wear it. The feminine version in Greek is Iliana. This is probably why Christians compare Elijah to John the Baptist, who told people that Jesus was coming.

For a while, the name Elijah was replaced in the Latin and English Bible versions by Elias, the Hellenized ancient Greek form of Elijah. Like Elijah, the name Elias is currently gaining popularity. In six states—New Mexico, Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, California, and Vermont—the name has made it into the top 100. Elias is endearing for little boys, grows into a “cool” name for teenagers, and sounds distinctive on adults. These states must have missed the memo. Elias is Walt Disney’s middle name, as if that weren’t enough!
