📜 History of National Eva Day

Eva has traditionally been a popular girl’s name in America, owing in large part to literature. “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” by Harriet Beecher Stowe grabbed people’s hearts and imaginations in 1852. While there is much to admire about the best-selling story, everyone’s favorite character is young angelic Eva, or Evangeline. A Victorian reading public’s heartstrings were pulled by the dainty Eva. She was a saint whose mission was to spread charity. Eva represented sacrifice and love. Her message struck a chord with a large Christian audience at the time. Unsurprisingly, the name Eva became more common when the novel was published. Eva was ranked 31st on the list of most popular names in the United States in 1989. As early as 1946, former performer and popular First Lady Evita Perón was winning hearts and inspiring baby names in Argentina.

Eva rose to fame again in the early 2000s after a little pause. Eva Longoria rose to fame as the seductive Gabrielle Solis in “Desperate Housewives.” Traditionalists were sad that “pure” Eva was no longer around, but the modern world welcomed the new Eva as a breath of fresh air.
