📜 History of National Food Day

CSPI initially focused on environmental preservation and renewable energy sources. When two of the group’s founders resigned, the nonprofit shifted its focus to food and alcohol safety. CSPI has transformed the dynamics of nutrition and food safety throughout the world over the years. It promoted healthy eating in restaurants and ensured that eateries fulfilled Food and Drug Administration requirements. The CSPI was instrumental in bringing to light the issue of high levels of saturated fat found in movie popcorn. It was also the group that spearheaded the anti-trans fat initiatives in fast food.

National Food Day was one of the CSPI’s most well-known campaigns. This day was established to increase awareness about nutrition and food safety, as well as to take a step toward ending hunger. One of the purposes of founding this day was to ensure that antibiotics used on farm animals are monitored. Food labeling clarity was also emphasized.

Food Day in Canada is more of a gastronomic event that evolved from the celebration of “The World’s Longest BBQ.” However, the major goal of National Food Day was to encourage people to consume healthier whole foods such as vegetables, whole grains, and protein-rich meals instead of processed foods and drinks. Campaigns and activities are mostly planned in New York and Washington, D.C., but also in hundreds of schools around the country.
