📜 History of National Get Gnarly Day
Whirlpool Corporation started off small, thanks to one family’s dream and a failed business venture. Lou Upton put his funds toward a project to make home furnishings in 1908. However, the business never took off, and as a reward for his investment, Upton was given the choice of something valuable from the failing operation. He selected the patents for a handwashing device that he believed would someday be powered by electricity. A wringer washer powered by an electric motor was developed in 1911 by Upton and his uncle Emory. To get the washer for the Upton Machine Company off the ground, they got financing from Lowell Bassford and assistance from Upton’s brother Fred. After just a few years, World War II put a stop to washer manufacture, and the plants were altered to produce parts for military and aviation equipment.
Upton Machine Company resumed making washers in the summer of 1945. During this time, the firm had a rapid expansion that turned it from a modest maker of washers and ironers to a substantial one with a comprehensive line of important household appliances, including the first fully automatic washer and electric dryer! The name of the business wasn’t changed to Whirlpool Corporation until 1949, in honor of the iconic brand. In 1951, the business surpassed $48 million in sales and $3 million in yearly profits for the first time since it was founded.
