📜 History of National Grape Popsicle Day
For thousands of years, people have savored frozen treats. The ice blocks were then smashed and served with fruits, syrups, and spices by the ancient Romans, who sent their slaves to the Highlands to collect them. Thomas Jefferson used to serve iced sorbets to guests at his Virginia farm, Monticello, as a way to keep them busy.
On his San Francisco porch in 1905, 11-year-old Frank Epperson was producing soda by combining water with a flavoring made of white powder. He left the Coke outside with the stirring stick inside after going inside, but for some reason forgot to take it. The temperature decreased during the course of the night, and the next morning Frank discovered his drink had frozen on the stick.
At a firemen’s ball in 1922, an adult Frank debuted his treat, which was well-received. And by 1923, he was hawking his delight on a stick in an Alameda, California, amusement park. Epperson branded his ice pops with the name “Epsicle.” But his children referred to it as “Pop’s sicle.” He thought the name was clever and eventually had it trademarked in 1924 so that the entire world may enjoy his “Popsicle”!
