Pope Gregory I, often known as Gregory the Great, was the first of 16 popes. He was born in Gregorius around 540 A.D., the son of a Roman senator, into a rich family with deep links to the church. Pope Gregory I established the Gregorian Mission to convert Anglo-Saxons in Britain to Christianity. He was declared a saint shortly after his death in 604 A.D.
