📜 History of National Hummingbird Day

Hummingbirds are little colorful birds recognized by their ability to hover in mid-air while rapidly flapping their wings, producing the characteristic humming sound. They are drawn to blooming plants, particularly deep-throated blossoms, and survive by feeding on the nectar. Their dependency on nectar has aided in the evolution of new hummingbird species driven by floral alterations. The number of species is continually increasing; however, there are now 360 species of hummingbirds. Despite their hostile nature, up to 25 distinct species of hummingbirds may thrive and coexist in the same environment. The hummingbird’s small size leaves it vulnerable to predation or capture in potentially harmful conditions, both man-made and natural. Pesticides, harsh weather, large insects or predators, habitat degradation, and bad feeders are just a few of the risks.

Even though these species have lived for a long time without the direct and active involvement or assistance of man, this is changing as more information about their susceptibilities and dangers to their existence is obtained. National Hummingbird Day exists to honor these lovely flying animals. It understands their usefulness in pollinating our flowers and identifies risks and dangerous circumstances for them. It also promotes safer techniques to protect their survival.
