📜 History of National IPA Day (India Pale Ale Beer)

Brewing beer in India was difficult owing to the hot environment, which was one of the reasons sailors took it on their voyage. The pale ales had a higher hop content because hops are a natural preservative, which helped them preserve their flavor while they journeyed from England to India. Porters were also sent to India and California at the time, demonstrating that it was not the only beer capable of being shipped. George Hodgson’s Bow Brewery produced and shipped one of the earliest I.P.A.s to India. The brewery was only two miles from the East India Docks, making it ideal for traders. After they lost their Russian customers, brewers in Burton, England, quickly started making beer to sell in India.

I.P.As were in considerable demand in England by 1840, and the beer was widely available by 1860. The craze quickly expanded throughout the British Empire. Although their recipes remained unchanged, some brewers in England began referring to them as “pale ales” rather than “India pale ales.” Prior to 1900, breweries in the United States, Canada, and Australia produced IPAs identical to those produced in England. IPAs, on the other hand, began to fade in favor around the turn of the century.
