📜 History of National Jamaican Patty Day

The classic Cornish beef-and-potato baked pastry, like other cuisines, was influenced by the country’s Indian indentured servants and African slaves. Cayenne pepper was introduced by Africans, and curried filling was introduced by Indians. The Cornish pastry was then transformed into the Jamaican patty by the addition of a particularly Jamaican ingredient, a fiery pepper known as the Scotch bonnet. This simple snack became popular quickly and has stayed that way for many office workers over the years.

During the 1960s and 1970s, as globalization opened up opportunities for work abroad, an increasing number of Jamaicans emigrated to nations such as the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada. Their delectable Jamaican patties followed them everywhere they went. This delectable Jamaican street cuisine is now available in any country with a sizable West Indian population. This patty has even become a frozen meal in many parts of the United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States and is widely available at pizza restaurants, grocery stores, and convenience stores. It’s eaten as a snack, as a substantial supper when combined with another dish, or as a quick and easy office meal.

Our formal celebration began in May 2015, when Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery was established on this date. The firm elected to organize this event each year in August to celebrate the day they originally opened their doors in 1989. Furthermore, Jamaica observes two significant holidays this month: Emancipation Day and Independence Day.
