Joan E. White launched National JoyGerm Day in 1981. She got the idea for the day after reading a newspaper story about a California couple who volunteered to worry for others in exchange for a fee. She subsequently established Joygerms Limited and declared January 8th, her late mother’s birthday, as National JoyGerm Day. Joygerms Day was first celebrated informally on January 8, 1981, when the idea for it and Joygerms Limited were created. However, it didn’t become a national holiday until 1985.
