📜 History of National Kids Take Over the Kitchen Day

Cooking has been practiced for over a million years, according to archaeological findings. Burnt bones and plant ashes discovered in South Africa’s Wonderwerk Cave allude to evidence of human fire management dating back a million years. As hunter-gatherers obtained fruits and vegetables that did not require cooking, humans did nothing to prepare their meals. Animal meat was roasted or boiled, and the cooking procedure was simplified.

The first version of the kitchen appeared some 200,000 to 400,000 years ago, during the Paleolithic epoch. These open hearths, which were the main centers of dwellings, were simply stones stacked in a circle for building the fire. The first partially modern cook stove was not created until roughly 200 years ago. Benjamin Thomson, commonly known as Count Rumford, created them in the 1790s. The stoves were simply box-like brick constructions with flat tops that could be used to drop pots onto the fire.

Culinary has progressed beyond a mere requirement for life to the realms of art and science, as new cooking techniques are developed and experiments with the food we consume are conducted. There are millions of culinary schools dedicated to teaching students how to cook — and cook well!
