Lydia Baxter is responsible for several classic Sunday school songs, including “The Gate Ajar For Me,” which she wrote three years before her death in 1874. Even though her illness left her bedridden and in terrible pain, Baxter spent her whole life writing hymns for the Baptist Church, which she joined soon after she married her husband, John C. Baxter.

Lydia Vladimirovna Litvyak, nicknamed “Lilya,” was a Soviet fighter pilot during WWII. She flew 66 combat sorties and scored five to twelve solo wins. Litvyak was the first female pilot to shoot down enemy planes and the first of two female fighter ace pilots. Litvyak has the most significant number of kills of any female fighter pilot. She was killed in battle near Orel during the Battle of Kursk by German aviation forces. Litvyak was 21 years old at the time.
