📜 History of National Matchmaker Day

The ancient Greek matchmakers, who were invariably women and were known as “promnestria,” acted as intermediaries, conveying messages and negotiating between the two families. They also had another crucial job: they relayed to the other side their personal feelings about the potential spouses. This frequently affected judgments, and the promnestra’s taste was blamed.

The matching industry was humming along nicely by the Victorian era. It was during this period that courting and matching restrictions gained traction and grew increasingly stringent. Around Easter, marriageable ladies were to have a massive debutante ceremony in court dubbed the “coming out” ritual. They were all dressed in white and carrying lovely flowers. They took part in a “season,” during which their moms and occasionally their dads would try to match them with an eligible family.

By the 1600s, matchmaking had taken on a new function in Britain, with parish vicars matching a person from their parish with someone of the same social status.

The matching process was frequently depicted in literature, such as in Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice” (the matchmaking mom), “Mulan” (the snobbish matchmaker), and “Fiddler on the Roof” (“Matchmaker, Make Me A Match”).

The concept of matching evolved along with the globe throughout and after the twentieth century. Arranged marriages were no longer the norm in various societies, and the idea of choosing one’s own mate gained traction. When seeking a companion, more and more individuals are broadening their horizons. Then there was the internet. Tinder and Bumble were hardly the first to explore combining science and matching. Since the 1920s, people have tried to make this process automatic and scientists have done experiments on the subject.

This day was established by the jewelry firm ArtCarved Bridal to commemorate and appreciate all matchmakers for their assistance in discovering and bringing two individuals together.
