National Missouri Day for the year 2023 is celebrated/observed on Wednesday, January 4th. There are until the next observance.

On January 4, National Missouri Day honors the 24th state to join the Union. The state has various cultural and artistic attractions, ranging from music festivals to riverboat cruises and tours of the nation’s largest brewing industry. Missouri, with its prosperous past and intriguing people, evolved into a rest stop for many migrant workers heading west.Some returned east, but many who stayed became household names, such as Walt Disney.

📜 History of National Missouri Day

Missouri gained statehood following the Missouri Compromise in 1820, which legalized slavery, and development was quick after 1820, aided by a network of rivers navigable by steamboats and concentrated in St. Louis. This attracted European settlers, especially Germans. Several minor engagements and union influence occurred during the Civil War. But after the war, the economy began to change. New farmland in the west was made possible by the railroads that were built in Kansas City.

The state of Missouri was named after the indigenous Missouri Indians. It is derived from the Greek word “ouemessourita,” which means “wooden canoe people” or “those who have dugout canoes.”

Anna Lee Brosius Korn, a native Missourian, came up with the idea of National Missouri Day. She wrote the old state hymn “Missouri” and believed that the state needed a whole day to honor prominent Missourians. As a result, House Bill 122 established Missouri Day in 1915 to “foster love for our state’s history and to teach rising generations of boys and girls the glories of Missouri.” Missouri is currently known for its natural beauty, with lovely lakes, forests, and wildflowers. In addition, the state produces the most lime in the country and is the leading producer of mined lead in the United States.
