📜 History of National Pizza Day in Brazil

One of the first allusions to pizza is found in Virgil’s “Aeneid.” It speaks of a delicate wheat cake that is strewn with herbs and mushrooms. The first pizza as we know it today was made in Naples. The populace required a substantial lunch they could grab on the fly. Pizza was sold by street vendors, who carried the food in enormous boxes and cut the pieces to suit the demands of the customers. Low-cost components, including garlic, salt, fat, tomatoes, and basil, were used to make these pizzas. Pizza was mocked by culinary reviewers, who considered it to be cheap cuisine. When Italian Queen Margherita ate a pizza with basil, mozzarella, and tomatoes in 1889, everything changed. It was given the moniker “pizza Margherita” since she enjoyed it so much.

Between 1870 and 1920, when the number of Italian immigrants to Brazil was at its highest, pizza was introduced. Many of these immigrants made Sao Paulo their home and found employment on the coffee plantations. They carried with them facets of their culture, especially food. Locals embraced pizza right away, and over time, demand slowly increased. Sao Paulo citizens conducted a competition in 1985 to determine the finest pizza from a list of ten selections. On the last day of the celebration, the locals agreed to hold the event every year because it was so successful. Since then, July 10 has been designated as National Pizza Day in Sao Paulo.
