In the twentieth century, men were not permitted to attend births or assist mothers during labor. Men realized it wasn’t their place, and women didn’t want their husbands to perceive them in that light. Some fathers would go to a pub to wait out the process. Few hospitals encouraged males to participate in the procedure in the 1950s, but significant developments occurred in the 1960s. Only then were dads permitted to remain in the labor room, and in the 1970s and 1980s, they were permitted to attend their child’s delivery. From then, the viewpoint began to alter.
There has been considerable development for new fathers who are becoming more active in home care. More and more parents are working two jobs and dividing domestic responsibilities and childcare. According to a 2016 survey, 16% of American men are stay-at-home dads, while just 27% of families with small children have fathers as the only breadwinners. Fathers now devote eight hours per week to child care and 10 hours to housework. There is still more work to be done because many families still consider childcare to be a woman’s responsibility. This holiday is one step toward encouraging fathers to take a more active part in their children’s care.
