📜 History of National Raisin Bran Cereal Day
In 1925, Skinner Manufacturing Company, the largest macaroni maker in the United States at the time, launched the first raisin bran brand, “Skinner’s Raisin-BRAN.” Bran flakes had previously existed, having been introduced in 1915. Skinner, on the other hand, was the first business to try adding raisins to the bran mix, resulting in the delightful cereal we’ve all grown to enjoy today. A year after introducing the cereal to the market, they patented the name ‘Raisin-BRAN.’
The Omaha-based firm had sole control of the term “Raisin-BRAN” for 17 years, until 1942, when Kellogg’s and Post began selling their own versions of the cereal.
Skinner, predictably, campaigned for their innovation. The corporation issued a cease-and-desist letter against its competitors in order to maintain their raisin bran monopoly. Skinner accused the other two cereal masters of trademark infringement and unfair competition.
They lost their right to the name in 1944, however, when the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit declared that a name that indicated the contents of an object could not be acquired as a trademark. The court claimed that the combination of raisins and cereal flakes was not novel, but we would gladly argue with them on that point.
As a result, any company can now create and market their own raisin bran variant.
