Medicare fraud may be reported in two ways, each of which has significantly different outcomes. The first is to report a crime under the Department of Justice (DOJ) reward program, which pays 15% to 25% of the money recovered by the DOJ. The average Department of Justice award for exposing Medicare fraud is $690,000. while some have claimed awards of up to $150 million. If you report fraud through the DOJ program, the government is required to initiate an investigation and keep you updated on the status of the investigation. Currently, whistleblowers account for three-quarters of the government’s Medicare fraud award cases. As a result, the government relies on whistleblowers to bring instances of Medicare fraud to their attention and earn a payment in exchange. The second option is to report Medicare fraud directly to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). CMS is in charge of the Medicare program. Fraud can be reported to the CMS via its website or phone hotline.
