After the Confederation of Canada was established, rebellions seeking an elected parliament and discontent with British rule led to the creation of the Dominion of Canada in 1867. Following the enactment of the British North America Act, 1867, the four independent provinces of Upper Canada, Lower Canada, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick were combined into a single dominion within the British Empire named Canada on July 1, 1867.

Canadian military forces fought alongside British forces in both World Wars. At the end of World War II, Canada was in a position of relative strength, and its quality of life increased. In 1949, Newfoundland, the country’s tenth province, acceded to Confederation.
