📜 History of National Sloppy Joe Day
He also offered iced fish, which frequently melted and made the bar floor filthy. Customers nicknamed José’s “sloppy Joe” since he was known for his sandwiches and damp bar flooring. The moniker, ironically, adhered to both him and the sandwich.
Some years later, Nobel Prize winner and renowned writer Ernest Hemingway, who was a regular at the Havana bar, recommended a friend, Joe Russell, who had recently opened a restaurant.
The sandwich is served at the restaurant in Key West, Florida, but it is rebranded as the “Havana sandwich.”
Another genesis theory suggests that the Joe was a variant on the popular “loose meat” sandwiches of the 1930s. A chef called Joe poured some tomato sauce on the loose meat at a cafe in Sioux City, giving birth to the Sloppy Joe.
Hunt’s, a ketchup manufacturer, invented the “Manwich” in 1969, making the sloppy Joe easier to cook. The Manwich was a can of sloppy Joe sauce that was marketed as more than simply a sandwich.
