📜 History of National South Carolina Day

South Carolina sustained major losses during the American Civil War and began to experience serious economic deterioration. In 1868, it finally joined the Union. The economy of South Carolina, like that of many other southern states, was mostly based on agriculture, and the state became one of the poorest. It went through a rebuilding era during which the state undertook various policy reforms. At the start of the twentieth century, South Carolina’s economic basis shifted, and the state built a booming textile sector.

Despite having previously imposed Jim Crow laws, which would ultimately result in a large demographic drop, South Carolina would become one of the civil rights movement’s strongholds. Beginning in the mid-twentieth century, South Carolina gradually evolved into the contemporary and lovely state that it is today. Its economy expanded and diversified over a wide range of industries. Laws and customs also changed, but the beautiful landscapes, history, and traditions that made the southeast a kind and friendly place to live stayed the same.
