📜 History of National South Dakota Day

Native American heritage abounds in South Dakota. Many Native American groups have lived there over the years. The Crow Creek Massacre occurred in the 14th century, when Native American tribes fought a horrific battle that murdered many women and children. The origin of the fight is unknown, but it is assumed that they battled for farmland due to overpopulation and an unpredictable environment.

From 1742 to 1743, the Vérendrye brothers were the first Europeans to go to the Great Plains and Rocky Mountains. From 1762 until 1801, the territory was held by France and eventually formed part of Spanish Louisiana. The Arikara tribe first occupied the territory, but they were eventually supplanted by the Sioux tribe. Finally, in 1803, the United States bought Louisiana. National South Dakota Day is currently observed to honor the state’s rich heritage. There are several historical places to visit as well as scenic landscapes to explore. This holiday is intended to bring more visitors to the state so that they, too, can experience its beauty.
