The same year, Miss Parloa of Boston, Massachusetts, released her book “Miss Parloa’s New Cookbook,” which included distinct recipes for the cookie and hermit cookie. Eggs and sugar were not utilized in Miss Parloa’s initial version of the recipe.
Fannie Farmer’s version of the dish appeared in her cookbook, “Boston Cooking-School Cook Book,” in 1896, and featured spices such as cinnamon, mace, nutmeg, and cloves. Raisins, currants, and other dried fruits were introduced to the recipe in 1936. The spicy hermit cookie recipe is a family favorite that has been handed down through the years.
