📜 History of National Stewart’s Root Beer Day

Native American tribes in America are where root beer got its start. The beverage was made by native people utilizing the root bark of sassafras plants. Root beer was used by the tribes both recreationally and for therapeutic purposes. Root beer began to be marketed as a commercial beverage only after Europeans arrived on American territory. The American pharmacist Charles Elmer Hires offered the fermented, creamy beverage as a dry mix. The dry mix would need to be combined with water, sugar, and yeast before being allowed to ferment and foam for a predetermined amount of time. Russell Conwell, a friend of Hires, proposed that Hires develop a liquid formulation for the beverage since it would improve the marketing plan. Conwell was correct because once Hires released the new liquid mix to the market, root beer sales skyrocketed. There are many different varieties of root beer due to the influence of many cultures and cuisines. With the basic components plus a combination of your preferred spices, treats, and herbs, you may brew your own root beer as well.
