📜 History of National Submarine Day

The submarine was known as a “fish boat” at the time, measuring 10 feet 6 inches in length and 3 feet 7 inches in diameter at its widest point. The fishing boat plunged to a depth of 20 feet in an astonishing exhibition. Villeroi created the USS Alligator in 1861, which the US sank in the Atlantic on April 2, 1863, after losing combat with a fierce storm.

The US government paid $150,000 for the Holland VI, developed by Irish-American inventor John Phillip Holland and commissioned on October 12, 1900. Lieutenant H.H. Caldwell commanded it, and it was called the first modern submarine with a slew of outstanding components all in one craft.

It possessed twin propulsion systems, a fixed longitudinal center of gravity, distinct main and auxiliary ballast systems, an improved hydrodynamic form, and a contemporary armament system. On November 21, 1910, the Holland VI was taken out of service. This was a big deal for the US Navy.

Senator Thomas J. Dodd presented legislation in the United States Senate in 1969 to designate April 11 as National Submarine Day. At the time, President Richard Nixon was in office, and there were no records of his proclamation. It may have passed the Senate and been presented in the House in 1970, although the precise date is unknown. Even so, the US Navy and other groups have recognized the Holland VI and what it did for modern warfare.
