📜 History of National Time Consciousness Week

On December 1, 1847, the British railways began using standardized time systems by conforming to Greenwich Mean Time (also referred to as railway time). By 1855, public clocks had been standardized to GMT. Only until 1883 did the habit of using uniform time spread to North America. Prior to that, the Pennsylvania Railroad, for example, utilized an astronomical timekeeping system known as “Allegheny Time.” In 1870, a man named Charles F. Dowd suggested four time zones for American railways based on the meridian through Washington, D.C. In 1883, his suggestion was accepted.

The Philippine Standard Time (P.S.T.) Act of 2013 was approved by the Philippine government in 2013. Following that, the National Time Consciousness Week began. The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) will give the P.S.T. to the Filipino people. Following the national standard time provides both social and economic benefits, according to the DOST. For one thing, it would encourage timeliness. This would have a favorable impact on productivity. This event is important because it shows people how important it is to keep track of their time, including deadlines and call times.
