📜 History of National Valentino Day

Rudolph Valentino was born Rodolfo Pietro Filiberto Raffaello Guglielmi de Valentina d’Antonguella in Castellaneta, Apulia, in the Kingdom of Italy. Valentino rose to become the first male Hollywood sex symbol of his day as a result of his extraordinary beauty and humorous demeanor. He worked his way up from busing tables and gardening to dancing and even becoming a cab driver before joining a production business and eventually attempting a career in filmmaking during the silent film period. His first role was as an extra in “Alimony.”

By 1919, he had played in supporting roles but had not yet achieved recognition until his major role in the film “The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.” This was the sixth-highest-grossing silent film of all time and one of the first to achieve $1 million at the box office. Valentino cemented his image as the Latin lover in “The Sheik” in 1921. His career was shaped by the success of this film. In 1922, Valentino worked on “Blood and Sand,” one of the year’s four highest-grossing films, and secured a lucrative agreement with United Artists, where he went on to feature in more blockbusters such as “The Eagle” and “The Son of the Sheik.”

Rudolph Valentino was a gifted and skilled performer. He fell on August 15, 1926, and was diagnosed with appendicitis and stomach ulcers. Valentino’s syndrome—perforated ulcers simulating appendicitis—was named after him. Valentino had peritonitis following surgery. His illness deteriorated, and he died on August 23 of that year at the age of 31. National Valentino Day was established to honor his legacy.
