📜 History of National Vitamin C Day

Long before its formal discovery in 1932, health specialists realized that citrus fruits could successfully prevent scurvy, a crippling illness that killed millions of sailors between 1500 and 1800. Getting enough vitamin C isn’t a new idea. Linus Pauling, a double Nobel laureate, advocated daily mega dosages of oranges to prevent the common cold in the 1970s. He wasn’t wrong about its effectiveness, but he was mistaken about the daily suggested dosage – 12 to 24 oranges each day!

Water dissolves vitamin C, often known as ascorbic acid. It persists in our tissues but does not store itself properly. To avoid vitamin C overdose, doctors recommend a daily dosage of 90 mg for men over the age of 19 and 75 mg for women. Vitamin C is a very potent antioxidant. It has the ability to heal wounds and control infections. It also makes collagen, a structural protein that is found in all of the connective tissues in our bodies.

Collagen is a protein that keeps our bodies together by providing structure and strength. Some of the greatest natural sources of vitamin C may already be found in our pantry and kitchen shelves. Stock up on citrus fruits like lemons, oranges, and grapefruit, which are high in vitamin C. Tomatoes, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, white potatoes, and bell peppers are other great sources.
