📜 History of National Youth HIV and AIDS Awareness Day

In the early 1980s, physicians began reporting rare kinds of pneumonia, cancer, and other ailments, and it was then that the world became aware of HIV and AIDS. Today, the virus has spread around the world, and roughly 38 million individuals are infected with HIV. Also, since AIDS started spreading, tens of millions of people have died from its effects.

Dr. Mark Wainberg, a researcher, contributed to the discovery of “3TC,” a medicine used to treat HIV, in 1996. This was a combined medication regimen that resulted in an immediate 60%-80% decrease in AIDS-related fatalities and hospitalization rates. The issue was that few patients could afford it. It wasn’t until the year 2000 that the “UNAIDS” organization agreed with five pharmaceutical corporations to cut the cost of HIV treatment for underdeveloped nations. The fact is that this disease’s condition is far from over. The purpose of National Youth HIV and AIDS Awareness Day is to educate the public about the effects of HIV and AIDS on young people.
